Bromsgrove Rugby Club – Supporting Ukraine Refugees Play Rugby in the Local Community

Many Ukranian refugees arrived in the UK with nothing and have had to try to integrate into local communities whilst starting a new life. Rugby is a great way for these families to meet new people and feel part of a team and the wider community. At Bromsgrove Rugby Club we are hugely passionate about providing sporting opportunities to our local community and pride ourselves on being inclusive.

In July 2022, Artur and his family came to the UK to flee and the war and were hosted by a local family whose son had played rugby at Bromsgrove Rugby Club when he was younger. Artur’s mum shares his journey so far:

“As Artur enjoyed sport in Ukraine, especially MMA and grappling, the family that are hosting us suggested that he try rugby.  He had never played before, or even seen the game played, but we were assured that he would be welcomed as the sport and club is so welcoming and inclusive.  They were right – the club, families and boys have made Artur so welcome and comfortable – not only at the club but also when he joined the school that many of them attended.  This spirit gave him confidence to throw himself into the game (literally!) and learn the new skills.  He was delighted at the end of the season to be awarded the Players’ Player.  We wish to thank the club community for the past year and look forward to remaining part of it while we wait to see what the future holds for us in the Ukraine. Artur has a bright rugby feature ahead and a pleasure to have in our U12’s team. “Artur has been a great addition to our team; he is a very popular member of the squad and a pleasure to coach.  Considering he had never played rugby before joining BRFC U11’s last year, he has established himself as a key player for us and undoubtedly one of our best tacklers!  The fact that Artur received the Players Player award in his first full season speaks volumes.” Scott, U12’s Coach.
